There are plenty of places to find out the facts about herbal remedies.Hebrs have been in usage for ages for it is used for many different purposes and people are aware of its medicinal value. However, Western medicine turned away from herbs and towards synthetic pharmaceuticals. These days, many Western doctors are becoming trained in herbal medicine as well and integrating alternative healing practices into their traditional practices. While it's impossible to list all the facts about herbs in one article, here are a few basic things you should know:
Just Because it's Natural Doesn't Mean it's Safe
This is perhaps one of the most common misconceptions about herbal remedies. Many people think just because a substance is natural, it is harmless. On the contrary, there are herbs which can be dangerous or even deadly. Ephedra, for example, was popular for weight loss but banned after experts learned of its dangerous side effects. Even safe herbs can be dangerous when combined with prescription or over the counter medicines. Therefore you should always consult a medical professional before trying herbal remedies.
Herbal Remedies Come in Different Forms
There are several ways to use herbal remedies. Many herbs are made into pill or capsule form to make for easy ingestion. Other herbs are made into tinctures. A tincture is a strong tonic which is dropped on the tongue using a medicine dropper. Tea is a popular method of using herbal remedies. Other herbs are ingested fresh or used in cooking. Still other herbs are extracted into essential oils. The best form of an herb depends on what herb it is and what you are using it for.
Herbs Can Sometimes be Just as Effective as Pharmaceuticals
One well-kept secret is that some herbs can be just as effective, if not more so, in treating various ailments and illnesses. For example, some people have found the use of St. John's Wort is as effective for treating their mild to moderate depression as prescription antidepressants. The two should never be used together, as serious side effects can result. Peppermint is another example which may work to soothe the stomach just as well as some over the counter drugs. Ginger is a commonly used tonic for nausea, especially in pregnant women.
There are countless books and websites where you can learn more facts about herbal remedies. Speaking with a qualified professional who is skilled in the use of medicinal herbs is also a good idea.
